Abstract

Teachers might be unaware of the High anxiety levels students can reach in English speaking classes. This study aimed to explore foreign language anxiety at Universidad Autónoma de Chiriquí. Moreover, FLA (Foreign Language Anxiety) fields reflect on the different elements that cause anxiety and how to measure the levels in English speaking classrooms. The purpose of this research was to find out which gender was more affected by foreign language anxiety in speaking classes in the Faculty of humanities, department of English, in the third year B.A program Morning session. Furthermore, it was aimed to answer if there was a presence of FLA in foreign language students. Research data were collected through Foreign Language Anxiety Questionnaire by Horwitz, an observation and an Interview. The findings showed that females registered higher levels of anxiety than male participants. The study suggest that English foreign language teachers should reinforce attention on anxiety-provoking issues in oral communication classes.
